About Matthew - 3 decades at the bench
I grew up in Sydney, Australia and for as long as I can remember I wanted to be a Jeweller. I left school when I was 16 and became an apprentice goldsmith working alongside my father. Dad is an incredible jeweller and he taught me everything I know about the trade.
I came to the UK 3 years ago with my wife and daughter and we love it so much, we decided to stay. Having grown up in a family where jewellery has always been a fundamental part of our lives it was a natural progression to start my own studio/workshop here – I love running my own business and get much satisfaction from meeting so many nice people. Being able to make something for them or for those they love, is so special and really rewarding.
In recent times the industry has undergone considerable change with modern technology which is exciting. I believe that to achieve excellence in this industry today requires a sound knowledge of the traditional bench skills but also the ability to embrace modern technology. I have now invested in a laser welder which enables me to do much of my work with even greater precision and also do jobs that I would have otherwise been unable to do.
I am inspired by everything around me – from the vivid colours and vast horizons of Australia to the intricate iron and stonework and the history of Europe and the UK. My mind is always thinking, creating and designing jewellery. I have been in the industry for 3 decades now and still love what I do – it is a privilege to make something that may be kept forever and handed down the generations and that is so unique and personal to the person who wears it.

“ Our 10-year old granddaughter’s pendant, consisting of her birthstone Peridot in a gold lattice-work setting on a gold chain, combines an apparent simplicity of design with less immediately obvious detailed work , which, we believe, will make it something our granddaughter will be glad to wear throughout her life. We are grateful to Matt for his suggestions and patience in achieving this successful outcome.”- Broad Chalke, Wiltshire

Wow what a ring, the colour is fantastic and it goes really well with my wardrobe. It’s big and bold but also elegant. I love it.– Farnham, Surrey

Just to thank you so much for all the effort you put into the ring and making me feel very comfortable during the design process. From the outset both of you helped me through what was a very daunting task of creating the perfect ring which my wife to be would love wearing every day of her life! To start with I had no idea what I wanted, all I knew was that there were no rings in shops that would fit the bill, they all looked the same. I really wanted to have a hand in designing a ring for Jen and seeing all the different diamonds, coloured stones and the possible layouts, that were within my budget, was brilliant because you could really get a feel of the ring coming together.
I'm sure that you will be seeing me and Jen at some stage next year to talk about the bands.- Salisbury, Wiltshire -
I love my ring – it was such a beautiful gift from my husband to mark a special birthday and a wonderful surprise. I absolutely love the colour of the pink sapphire and the way it sits so close to my finger so that it doesn’t catch on anything. It has an antique style with a modern twist and I wear it all the time. Thank you.– Effingham, Surrey
